Notes from the Director of Music Ministries

On March 13th at 4:00 PM I will be playing as a featured soloist with the Reston Community Orchestra.  The concert will be held at United Christian Parish of Reston (11508 North Shore Drive, Reston, VA).  Tickets are not needed for this event, but there is limited seating, be sure to arrive early enough to get a good seat.  At this concert I will be playing the Rheinberger Organ Concerto No. 2 in g minor.  It is a audience favorite that shows off both the powerful side of the organ and also the delicate lyrical side.  The other half of this concert will be the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3, played by Robert Statham.  I find it interesting that both Robert and I are Music Directors at Lutheran churches in the area.  In addition to that, the orchestra conductor is also a Lutheran Music Director in the area as well.  With three local Lutheran musicians this is sure to be a well-attended concert!

On April 10th at both services (8:30 AM and 11:00 AM) we will be dedicating the new handbells at Holy Cross.  They arrived in the middle of the snowstorm last month and we have had a great time rehearsing with them ever since.  Everyone is astounded at the change in sound.   The new bells, both treble and bass, add so much to our existing bell choir.  At the dedication service we will have anthems played by both bell choirs and an anthem played by a combination of the bell choirs.  Be sure to mark this date on your calendar.  It will be a wonderful celebration and festive service.

On May 1st (time is TBD) Brass of Peace will be returning to Holy Cross for another concert.  Brass of Peace is a group of Metro DC’s most talented and promising youth musicians.  Throughout their performance the musicians of Brass of Peace will demonstrate what their instruments can do through lyric, jazzy, and pyrotechnical solos.  Musicians from Brass of Peace have gone on to study at our nation’s top conservatories and now perform with ensembles such as the Philadelphia Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, and the United States Air Force Band.  The HCLC organ will also be featured in a joint brass/organ piece at this concert.  This is definitely a concert you won’t want to miss!
